Exemption for Overseas Indians from linking their mobile numbers with Aadhar cards

Exemption for Overseas Indians from linking their mobile numbers with Aadhar cards.

To address the difficulty being faced by PIO/OCI cardholders in operating their mobile phone connections due to insistence of telecom operators on linking their mobile numbers with Aadhar Cards, the following steps have been taken by the Government of India :

(a) The Ministry of External Affairs had taken up the issue with the Department of Telecom [DoT] for exempting Overseas Indians from linking their mobile numbers with Aadhar cards.

(b) In response, DoT has issued a letter dated December 1, 2017 to all mobile phone service licenses to use alternative methods to re-verify existing customers belonging to certain categories, including PIO/OCI cardholders.  The procedure and format for this has also been prescribed.
