Prime Minister and Home Minister Condemn Varanasi blasts

Condemning the explosions in Varanasi in which at least four people were killed and several injured, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today appealed to the people to maintain calm. "The Prime Minister has appealed for maintaining peace and calm. He is constantly monitoring the situation. He has condemned the blasts " his media adviser Sanjaya Baru said. 

The Union Home Minister, Shri Shivraj Patil has strongly condemned today’s bomb blasts in Varanasi in which innocent people were killed. He has described the incidents as an attempt by desperate elements to disturb communal harmony and peace. 

The Government of India is in constant touch with the Uttar Pradesh Government for any assistance that they may require. The Union Home Minister spoke to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav and took stock of the situation. The situation is being constantly reviewed at the highest level.
