Press Release on Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Fund

T.P. Sreenivasan
Deputy Chief of Mission

Dear Friend,

You will recall that the Minister for Community Affairs, Shri Wajahat Habibullah had informed the Indian-American community in February 1999 that members of the community would be welcome to contribute to the cost of construction of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial in Washington D.C. Some contributions have been received to partly defray the local costs of the Memorial. Although the necessary resources would be forthcoming, we continue to believe that the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi should be built with contributions from as many Indian-Americans as possible.

I would, therefore, request that those who wish to contribute to the Memorial may send their cheques to the Embassy latest by end of August, '99. As indicated earlier, the cheques should be in favour of "India Centre Inc. - Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Fund." Contributions will be entitled to tax exemption (EIN-52-2135483). The Memorial will bear the inscription "From the people of India and of Indian origin in the United States". Our effort is to dedicate the memorial on the next birthday of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2, 1999.

Your early response is requested.

Yours sincerely,
T.P. Sreenivasan
