PRESS RELEASE - Ambassador Nirupama Rao Meets Senator Robert Menendez

Ambassador Rao met with Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey on April 23, 2013 at Capitol Hill in Washington DC.

Senator Menendez is a Member of the Senate India Caucus and has long championed the interests of the Indian American community in the U.S. Congress. As the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Menendez is among the leading voices on foreign policy in the United States.

During the meeting, Ambassador Rao and Senator Menendez exchanged views on the latest developments in India-U.S. relations and highlighted the shared values and interests binding their strategic partnership.  They expressed appreciation for the strength provided to this partnership by the rich and vibrant contributions of the  Indian American community in the United States.

There was also discussion on the proposed immigration reform being discussed in the U.S. Congress, where Senator Menendez is one of the eight Senators leading the deliberations. Highlighting the rapidly growing trade and economic engagement between India and the United States, Ambassador Rao conveyed her deep appreciation to Senator Menendez for his support for high-skilled immigration, an issue of significant interest for Indian businesses in the United States.

Ambassador Rao and Senator Menendez also exchanged views on the regional situation in South Asia.

Ambassador Rao invited Senator Menendez to visit India. He accepted the invitation for such a visit at a mutually convenient time.
